Gulf South Conference Announces 2009
Men’s Basketball Awards
Birmingham, AL—The Gulf South Conference
is proud to announce its All-GSC Men’s
Basketball honors for the 2008-09 season.
New faces headline the squad with only
one returning First Teamer and two Second
Team returnees.
Christian Brothers forward Nick Kohs
returns from last year’s West Division
First Team and leads the Buccaneers’ sweep
of individual accolades. Kohs was also
named the GSC West Division Player of the
Year becoming CBU’s first-ever winner.
Bucs’ Head Coach Mike Nienaber took home
his second West Division Coach of the Year
laurel in three seasons after leading the
school to their first-ever No. 1 seed in
the Conference Tournament. Guard Scott
Dean continued Christian Brothers’ success
in the West Division Freshman of the Year
voting, becoming the fourth CBU newcomer
to claim honors in five seasons.
North Alabama provided the East Division
Player of the Year for the second
consecutive year when guard
Kenny Johnson
was tabbed the top player following former
teammate Casey Holt.
Valdosta State Head Coach Mike Helfer
collected his first-ever East Division
Coach of the Year accolade after leading
the Blazers to the East Division Crown.
Alabama-Huntsville guard Josh Magette was
named East Division Freshman of the Year,
becoming the Chargers’ first newcomer
winner since 2005-06.
North Alabama forward
Thomas Fraise
makes the jump from last year’s Second
Team, while West Georgia guard Doug
Daniels and Harding guard Trent Morgan
return to this season’s Second Team
