UNA
MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM RANKED THIRD IN
SOUTH REGION
Jan. 31,
2008
INDIANAPOLIS – For the first time since
2006, the University of North Alabama
men’s basketball team is ranked in the
NCAA Division II South Region poll, coming
in at No. 3 in this season’s initial
rankings.
The rankings cover Division II games
through Jan. 27, in which the Lions sport
a 13-7 overall record with a 12-4 mark in
regional play. It does not include UNA’s
101-88 win over West Georgia on Tuesday.
The poll was released by the NCAA Division
II Men’s Basketball Committee and will be
updated weekly.
Tampa claimed the top spot in the region
with a 10-2 regional record, while fellow
Sunshine State Conference representative
Florida Southern was second. Arkansas Tech
was fourth, followed by Benedict, Rollins,
West Georgia, Alabama-Huntsville, Florida
Tech and Harding. With five schools in the
rankings, the Gulf South Conference is the
most-represented league.
The South Region is made up of teams from
the GSC, SSC and SIAC. Tournament
champions from each league receive an
automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament in
March. Following the automatic qualifiers,
the next five highest-ranking teams also
advance to the regional tournament.
