Four
GSC Players Tabbed NABC All-District
March 20,
2008
The Gulf South Conference placed four
players and the Coach of the Year on the
2008 NABC Division II South Region
All-District Team
GSC Players of the Year, Casey Holt from
North Alabama (East Division) and Matt
Hall from Harding (West Division) led the
way with First Team honors. Holt helped
lead UNA to its first NCAA Elite Eight
since 1996. Holt is also currently 10th on
UNA’s all-time scoring list with 1,205
points. He has been the leader of this
year’s team.
A five-year member of the program, he
suffered a tear in one of his feet last
season in the fifth game and missed the
rest of what would have been his senior
season. His point total for this season is
more than he had in scored in his
three-plus seasons at UNA (580).
Holt claimed player of the week honors
three times during the regular season and
made the all-tournament team in the NCAA
South Regional Tournament. He had a streak
of 20 straight double-figure games dating
back to December 3 that ended when he had
just four points on senior night against
West Georgia.
He also recorded the school’s first
triple-double in recent history against
Carver Bible College. Holt has scored 20
or more points 12 times this season and
has five games with 30 or more points. He
has recorded a double-double on eleven
occasions this season.
Matt Hall finished his career at No. 2 in
the GSC in scoring (2,227), while also
becoming just the third player in league
history to win three Player of the Year
accolades.
The Conference also added two players on
the Second Team. Christian Brothers' Kevin
Weybright wrapped up his career, climbing
to No. 7 in the GSC career scoring list
(1,972), while leading the Bucs to their
first-ever NCAA berth. Valdosta State's
Devario Hudson completed his career,
ranking second in the league in rebounding
(9.7) and eighth in scoring (16.5).
Last, but not least, UNA Head Coach Bobby
Champagne was named Coach of the Year
after leading the Lions to the GSC East
Division crown and berth in the Elite
Eight thanks to the 2008 NCAA South Region
Championship win over Benedict.
