GSC ANNOUNCES WINTER 2006-07 ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM

Birmingham, AL -- The Gulf South Conference proudly announces its 2006-07 Winter Sports All-Academic Teams. 22 student-athletes were selected: as representatives of the East and West Division of both men's basketball and women's basketball were chosen.

The Winter All-Academic Team is selected by the Gulf South Conference Sports Information Directors (SIDs) and Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs) in a joint vote. Nominees must meet all three of the following qualifications to appear on the ballot: 1) an overall grade point average (G.P.A.) of 3.20 or better on a 4.00 scale for their entire academic career, 2) a starter or significant contributor to the squad, and 3) leadership, academic curriculum and community service.

Four players were tabbed to the East Division Men's Basketball All-Academic Team. Alabama-Huntsville placed three of the four, as guard Jason Smith, forward Jordan Brewer and guard Kael Coleman were all chosen.

North Alabama guard Kenny Johnson rounded out the East Division All-Academic Team. Johnson played in all 29 contests and started 20. He averaged 7 points and just over 2 rebounds a game during his sophomore season. He shot 41 percent from the field, 37 percent from the 3-point line and 85 percent from the free throw line for UNA this season, and was second on the team with 74 assists on the year. Johnson posted a career high with 17 points and 6 rebounds versus Harding and played all 45 minutes in the contest. The Louisiana native nailed the game winning basket versus Arkansas Tech with 10 seconds to play in the game. Johnson had 15 points, 8 assists and 3 rebounds playing all 40 minutes.

Kenny is majoring in Computer Information Systems.
