LIONS SIGN FORWARD
University
of North Alabama head men’s basketball
coach Bobby Champagne announced the
signing of Mirnes Islamovic to a National
Letter of Intent for the 2008-09 academic
year on Thursday.
“We are very excited to get a player as
talented as Mirnes” Champagne said. “We
think that he will make an immediate
impact to our program.”
Islamovic, who signed with the Lions
during the first week of the national
signing period, is currently at Florida
Gulf Coast Community College in Panama
City, FL. His Commodores are currently
ranked #18 in the National Junior College
poll with a record of 9 wins and only 1
loss. The 6’8” 240 pound sophomore from
Brcko, Bosnia, is averaging 10.8 points
and 7.2 rebounds per game while shooting
62.5% from the field, 50% from beyond the
three point line and 71% from the charity
stripe. In the Commodores 9 games he has 5
double doubles while playing 22.5 minutes
per game.
“He is playing on a very talented team and
he has bought into how Coach Jay Powell
wants them to play and they are having
tremendous success,” Champagne said.
“Coach Powell was very helpful in the
recruiting process and does a great job of
making sure his players are prepared after
they leave his program.”
As a freshman in 2005-06, he averaged 25
points 12 rebounds and 1 block per game
during the Commodores final 9 games. He
missed the entire 2006-07 season due to an
injury.
Prior to coming to the United States, he
averaged 42 points and 16 rebounds for the
Brcko Junior Team. He had a season high 68
points and 24 rebounds. Islamovic also
played for the Bosnian Kadet National Team
and averaged 18 points and 8 rebounds in
four games. Mirnes will be the third
player from Bosnia to play for the Lions
in as many years. Dusko Stojnic is
currently averaging 2 points and 2.7
rebounds for the Lions while former All-GSC
performer, Esmir Guzonjic is playing
professionally in France. Assistant Coach
Goran Secerovic is also from Bosnia. |
