LIONS SIGN FORWARD

University of North Alabama head men’s basketball coach Bobby Champagne announced the signing of Mirnes Islamovic to a National Letter of Intent for the 2008-09 academic year on Thursday.

“We are very excited to get a player as talented as Mirnes” Champagne said. “We think that he will make an immediate impact to our program.”

Islamovic, who signed with the Lions during the first week of the national signing period, is currently at Florida Gulf Coast Community College in Panama City, FL. His Commodores are currently ranked #18 in the National Junior College poll with a record of 9 wins and only 1 loss. The 6’8” 240 pound sophomore from Brcko, Bosnia, is averaging 10.8 points and 7.2 rebounds per game while shooting 62.5% from the field, 50% from beyond the three point line and 71% from the charity stripe. In the Commodores 9 games he has 5 double doubles while playing 22.5 minutes per game.

“He is playing on a very talented team and he has bought into how Coach Jay Powell wants them to play and they are having tremendous success,” Champagne said. “Coach Powell was very helpful in the recruiting process and does a great job of making sure his players are prepared after they leave his program.”

As a freshman in 2005-06, he averaged 25 points 12 rebounds and 1 block per game during the Commodores final 9 games. He missed the entire 2006-07 season due to an injury.

Prior to coming to the United States, he averaged 42 points and 16 rebounds for the Brcko Junior Team. He had a season high 68 points and 24 rebounds. Islamovic also played for the Bosnian Kadet National Team and averaged 18 points and 8 rebounds in four games. Mirnes will be the third player from Bosnia to play for the Lions in as many years. Dusko Stojnic is currently averaging 2 points and 2.7 rebounds for the Lions while former All-GSC performer, Esmir Guzonjic is playing professionally in France. Assistant Coach Goran Secerovic is also from Bosnia.
